Replacement speaker for a 1x12?

I picked up a Marshall MX 1x12 (MDF) like new for chump change, and need suggestions on a replacement speaker. It has the original Seventy/80 in it.

• I'm playing late 70's / early 80s-style rock, blues, funk, etc.

• Mostly using Les Pauls, but some single coil Strat stuff too.

• Mainly using an SC20H (JCM 800) and a DSL20H, but I have other tops as well.

• No weird suggestions, I'd like to stick to common speakers. Example, speakers made from hemp are out.

What's a good speaker that'll accommodate a variety of styles?

The particle board MX cab will mellow out speakers a bit.
When I ran my DSL20HR through a pair of MX112's, I liked the G12H-30 Anniversary speakers better than most of the usual suspects.

G12-65 or equivalent at first blush, but as Fritz said you have to take into account the cab material and design.

In a 1x12 an H magnet speaker might work better because of the little extra, of well, everything. So a Classic Lead 80 could be a consideration.

For versatility I like the celestion v-type, celestion creamback 65 & 75, tonespeak birmingham 1275, wgs et65

the celestion g12-65 suggested above is maybe my favorite speaker but it has a very distinct warm response that works best for compressing down bright signals, a little too distinct to be an all-arounder

Is the cab a closed back?

I have a G12M-65 16R in a 1x12 open back combo (DIY JCM800). Works good, can miss top end a little but then I purposely missed out the bright cap etc. Works good for old and 1980s stuff.

Being that it's an MDF cab I'd want a speaker that's a little brighter, like a G12-65.

Yes.
MX112 is closed back, front ported.
The backs are a b*tch to get out...

I recently got my hands on an Eminence V128 and I wish i did so sooner. its got a mix of V30 and G12-65, nice mids but not super aggressive and a smoother top end with less fizz. honestly I don't why no one talks about that speaker with a lot of complaints about the V30 being too harsh or the G12-65 being bit too in the pocket. This has the best of both without their inherit weaknesses

Yes, it was the stock speaker in my traynor ycv80 212 openback. The OP didnt say what about the tone requires the replacement.

My go-to replacement/upgrade speaker has been the WGS Veteran 30 but their Green Beret might also be a consideration.

I just replaced a pair of Alnico Creambacks in my Avatar G112 Vintage 1x12's with Rawson Sparfield Yorkshire 12 A's from England. These are almost exact replica's of the Dave Reeve's purple label Fane cast frame Hiwatt speakers of the early 70's. I played my original '73 1987 through a '71 Hiwatt 4123 4x12 and have missed that aggression since I sold that rig in the late 70's. I've tried new Fanes and they just aren't the same animal to me. I accidently found these through a blog from Great Britain and like them so far with my Astoria Custom with GEC KT66's and Mullard I63's. Purchase and shipping from GB was seamless as the manufacturer handled the whole affair. Not cheap at $570 for the pair to my door in Houston but to get that Hiwatt/Marshall aggression compared to the normal Celestion/Marshall thing, was worth it. Can't wait to hear them after I really break them in. As for Celestions, I always like the G12 H30 Anniversary once broken in. Sounds like ass when brand new though.

Hi. Maybe not what you want to hear but the speaker you have is already better by far than the mdf cabinet it is in. Spending a lot on a Greenback or the like and putting it into a small mdf cab would be like putting a diamond tiara on a pig. No speaker can make an accousically dead box sing.

I have a few speakers 1X12’s I will have a look quite a few Marshall G-12’s 8 ohm and 16 ohm
I play rock 70-80’s Mighf even have a V30 I have 2 cabs with those in it I really like the 30’s

I would honestly recommend jensen C12R since gain isn't your priority. Cheap and a great speaker. Have one in my YGM3 combo and love it to death. would also recommend the celestion g12-35xc special edition. It also has great highs to brighten up that MDF cab and give some character.

This is. Vintage shoot out but the Italian company that makes Jensen's did a good job with the tone. I bought mine before the video.

Celestion T-75 or Eminence swamp thang are warm and very safe middle ground.

V30 or V-type is bright and punchy

Greenbacks are low power and mellow

All plentiful on the used market and found locally on Facebook or Craigslist.

Also the manowar can be very nice by itself.
