Too cool! Good ole Martimus. I still have a couple of his tube business shirts which look cool as shit.

My V1 tube is a BEL 12AX7 Marty turned me on to. I really like it with this amp. I got the RFT AT7 and Mullard AT7 from my source recently. Those buys turned out great with this amp too. Just experimenting. Reading and then pulling the trigger.

Prices are out of my league for NOS 12AX7’s but some of these lesser gained versions can be bought and utilized for good results too.

I found my stash of tubes I got from Marty. I also found where I printed out what he told me they are. I've been using the Raytheon BP in V1, but he said it's a lopsided very high gain tube and he recommended putting it the PI. I don't know if I ever even tried it in the PI before but I put it in there and is sounds great. So then on to V1, I rolled a few and ended up (for now at least) with a NOS BEL India Mullard (by Philips) in V1. Amp sounds pretty awesome right now. Way better than it did with the CP tubes in those slots.

Now to experiment with V2 (hot mod), right now I still have JJs in it..

I also have a NOS Canadian Mullard (by Philips) and a used 1959 Square Getter RCA that I got from Marty.

Marty was always promoting black-plate Ray in V2, but, as you said, it's uneven & he recommended that particular one for PI... 👍...

He said that the BPR was very transparent, so, if you put a stellar tube in V1, it would give you that tone w/o coloration. Like, RFT, if you put that in V2, you will hear RFT from that point on...

True. The BEL kinda does what an RFT does in V1 of a Marshall. Shaved some top end yet barks and bites. I've read a few guys referring the BEL to a Mullard in likeness. Wish I had more. One of mine bit it. I just have the one now. And I like it best in this bitey Marshall amp.

What the BEL injects to my ears is a nice thick mid flavor. Ballzy. Mixes with the upper or top end of the SC nicely. Better than my Raytheon BP for sure in V1. I agree V2 is where I found the BP effecting tone for the best. Always seemed articulation was better or had more note separation with the BP.

I agree using a neutral PI. Translates the priors well. That old Mullard AT7 as a PI has turned out to be great. The RCA was great too but it did alter the tone rounding off the edges regarding bite. A bit smoother yet had a cool tonality when soloing. The Mullard kept that all around upper mid zone and thump stayed intact. A nice clean saturation.

And I gotta tell ya the new speaker increased the Clacker(set of ballz). I wanna bitch slap all the neighbors with it. :D

Interesting, Steve. I have a Mullard in V1 of mine and a Raytheon BP as PI too!!
I had a Baldwin (Raytheon) in V2 first spot of hot mod in my old 4010 and had tons of hum. Switched it out and it essentially went away, other than the normal high gain noise.

Are any of you guys using an attenuator with your SC? If so which one? I may be looking to get one soon.
I have a Dr Z attenuator round here some where. I believe it’s good up to 50 watt amps. Pm if yer interested. I’m not selling but you can use it as long as you want. Otherwise it will continue to gather dust. I used it with my amps a bit. Ran fine.

I have one, a Weber Minimass 50, I’ve had it about 3 years now, it works great!

I use it most of the time, but sometimes, (when my wife’s not home), I’ll bypass it to get the speaker pushing some air. :naughty:

Attenuators are great for making it possible to crank the volume at home without losing your hearing.

There are some great overdriven tones in these amps when pushing the power amp section, along with the preamp section.

I like the master on 7 or 8, with the preamp around 5 or 6, can’t do that at home, (20 watt mode), without an attenuator.

This is exactly why I'm thinking I might want one.

There are plenty of choices to choose from at all price points, from around $100, (Bugera Ps1, I don’t recommend it), to well over $1000!

Some have reampers like the Boss Waza TAE, Fryette Ps, and the BadCat Unlease. I don’t completely understand the “reamper” term in this context. The term “reamper” I’m familiar with is a recording function used in the studio.

Suffice it to say there are many great choices for attenuating these days, some do a better job than others, and there are all kinds of price points to fit your budget.

I have a Jet City Jettenuator. They are no longer made, but can be found used. It works great.

As far as I know, it is the unit that was copied for the Bugera and similar units. The copies aren't very good but I have never heard any negative comments about the original Jet City unit.

Thanks guys!

After your comments I definitely want one. I just feel like I'm missing something by not being able to crank the power section and curiosity got the best of me.

Solar, I appreciate the offer, but I'd rather not borrow.

I looked for a Jet City, but didn't find one. I didn't even look at any others because I'd rather go with something recommended by you guys and since scozz is using it without issue, I just went ahead and ordered a MiniMass direct from Weber. :fingersx:

Master on 7-8 and preamp on 5-6 yields some incredible tones with the SC20!! It allows the guitar volume and tone to then provide the whole pallette of tonal color.100% agree. (Honestly, even on the 5-watt setting, you don't have to use 20 watts, although like you, I also prefer the higher setting.)

So I’m starting to think I have a problem with my SC20H. Fired it up and switched standby off to 20 watts. Okay for awhile. Switch to 5 watts. Play for a bit. Put on standby. Go grab another guitar from its case. Switch back to 20watts. No sound. Humming from speakers. Switch to standby. Check out tubes. All glowing on. Try again. No sound. Switch off and let sit for 2 minutes. Fire up. Wait a minute and standby off. Ok again. Both modes work fine. Switch to standby again. Come back 10 minutes. Same issue. Hum. No sound. Turn off and wait. Power on fixed issue but if you put back on standby and not switch off standby to play again within a few minutes it won’t produce sound and makes a humming noise. No fur blown. Tubes glow ok
