Not a huge Gilmour fan, but I can't believe this song never got more radio airplay than it did:

Indeed I personally rate David as a superior technical guitarist to all of the above mentioned guitarist though Beck is no slob and that is not to say Clapton and Page are but they IMO play it pretty safe and that is a bore for my pallet.

David Gilmour plays with feeling at all times...he is the guitar. If I go on I run the risk of publicly bashing my idols (well James Patric Page anyhow) so I will not.

David Gilmour is the cats meow and I have been fortunate enough to pick up on that at age 8 thanks to my Father.

Good stuff...thanks for sharing as he has my respect always.

What a great thread, I’m a huge Gilmour fanboy! Lol! Love his style and his creativity, not to mention all those great bends and inflections! The feel and emotion in his playing is unequaled imo.

I also liked the way he approached playing live, all of the Floyd members actually. You would never see him running around the stage, jumping up and down in some kind of crazy unisex outfit, with sparkles and gothic horns and such, lol.

I hate that shit! I even have a hard time watching Led Zeppelin,… with Page and all his antics and silly facial expressions, same for AC/DC, The Who, etc., lol!

There are two bands that had a huge impact on me and my guitar playing, The Beatles and Pink Floyd.

If I had to pick a single guitarist that had the biggest impact on me, it would be David Gilmour.

Thanks for this great thread @mtm105.

I'm not really a fan of psychedelic rock or Pink Floyd. I listen to them when they appear on the radio. But like most people, I do love Gilmour's playing. When I'm in the mood, I seek him out on youtube, sometimes skip to the tasty bits when I don't want to listen to all the lyrics. I also got guitar pro tabs to some of his best work and rip the odd backing track off of youtube to sync together in GoPlayAlong.

Really love his playing and enjoy trying to emulate him at home.

Wow great thread man!!

I literally have never learnt any Gilmour stuff until this weekend (usually a self confessed slash fanboy 😂)

I thought I got a similar(ish) tone with the Gibson but using two reverbs!!

I've never gotten into listening to Pink Floyd one song at a time. It's the kind of music where if I'm going to listen to it, I do it when I have free time set aside and I let the entire album play through from start to finish with no interruptions or distractions. This applies particularly to Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall. Which are "my era" of Pink Floyd. I am less familiar with what preceded and followed them.

Gilmour is my number one Strat player, as far as tone goes. I wish I could make a Strat sound like that. I’ve been wanting to get a black one with a black pickguard and aged white pickup covers, just like Gilmour’s black Strat.

I used to hate Pink Floyd until a friend sat me down and showed me Live At Pompeii. My opinion instantly changed, and I grew to appreciate most of the phases of their career. I haven’t tackled the post-Waters era, though. Anyway, Gilmour is great.
