I've played Strats a lot and do the same thing. It's subtle but all tweaks are.

If you want one that relics quick pick up a nitro finished AVRI Stratocaster. My 59 is weathering nicely.

tremolo guitars have better tone w/o the backplate...

That depends. If the backplate is made from aged spruce, then tone just oozes from it.*

I think it was Hendrix, who figured that out. The thing about trem springs, is they add a sort of reverb to the guitar, naturally. When the plastic is holding in the vibrations, you get a funky reverberation from the plastic. If the cavity is open, it allows the vibrations to escape freely & you get less reverb/recycle effect.

That's why many people remove them & when they get a Strat, they are missing. Because they were purposely removed & the player has played it so long w/o, that they probably don't even know if they have it anymore...

That or my shirt acts as a spring damper. Back when I played strats I had to keep the back plate on due to where I held the guitar and being so skinny my hip bone would sometimes push on the springs or the block and I'd be inadvertently changing pitch.

Probably don't have to worry about that anymore lol.

So that would be a hip/belly dive . By no action on my part the last Strat I purchased 10 years ago came with the trem set to float and I hate the whammy bar and I discovered I can get palm dives which is nice for a little accent once in a while . I just don't care for the wear and tear on strings from using the whammy bar along with going out of tune once I engage the thing . Now when I was a kid I couldn't not use the whammy bar for all of that Jimi stuff .

Thank you. It's stock. I don't remember what they were putting in them. Some custom shop version. I've had it for several years. Plays very good and is resonant. Sounds great even unplugged. I keep it tuned down a half step.

Maybe the Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's pickups ? I have those in an alder body 57 reissue maple neck Strat and I like them in this Strat .

I remember people saying that he pulled 2 springs, & angled the outside ones inward on the rake, but, all the images seem to show 5 springs...

Maybe the Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's pickups ? I have those in an alder body 57 reissue maple neck Strat and I like them in this Strat .

I'm thinking they were pickups designed for that model and not a set that were sold separately. That's probably why I don't remember a particular model name. They sound good. Half step down tuning really makes that neck pickup thump. I'm running 10s on it but thinking about stepping up to 10.5 once I exhaust my 10 gage sets.

The finish on these were called Flash Nitro. The paint will chip just looking at it.

A lot of people like half step tuning just for the reason you mentioned . Flash nitro for sure .

What's relic'd about it? I see maybe a tiny spot and the chrome parts might be a bit faded (tuners more so). Nice looking guitar, though I don't generally go for the lighter green shades myself.

It is a Journeyman Relic well aged but not abused. I actually condsider Seafoam to be Dark Green, compared to Surf Green

i watched a video on youboob somewhere back. that theory of the angled springs was debunked
and indepth. all my guitars with springs are angled. maybe one day i'll put them back straight across.

Angled vs straight makes a difference in tension. Just a matter of physics, springs are more elongated when angled, so it only makes sense. I tested it myself on one of my Strats btw.

But that tension can be fine tuned by adjusting the claw, no? Or am I missing something?
