For me I start with hating maple fingerboards. REALLY don't like the feel of a fingerboard with a finish on it, not in the least.

And then I can't get an overdrive tone out of a strat that I can stand. Other people can. I can't.

If I can't get an overdrive I like, I can't get a tone I like. I'm not much into clean channels.
I agree 10000 % . That is my conundrum with Fender Strats , trying to get an decent overdriven tone . I have tried every thing imaginable , pedals , pickups etc. To me it's not even worth it to dial in the 2555X 's every which way loose . Fender Telecasters on the other hand are a joy to play and give me the tone and then some .

Life is short, play what you like! I can personally sympathize with some of the sentiments here. I love Strats in theory but go hot and cold and them in reality. Sometimes when I have them dialed in just right they're fantastic, other times I just want a humbucker.

Well, I have had American, American Deluxe, MIJ, MIM, as well as one of the first Bullet Strat models. Have always wanted to like a Strat.
In 1980 I was looking to buy my first REAL guitar. I was sure I wanted a Strat. A local store had more than 5 of em.
I would go in and play 3-4 times a week. They were hanging right next to a new brand of guitar that I'd never heard of.
One day as I was walking out of the store. A salesman handed me a flyer. I took it, didn't pay much attention to it, at the time.
Later, while on the crapper, I read the flyer. G&L F-100 by Leo Fender. Hmmmmmmm.
Next time in the store, I picked up an F-100 series II.
I never touched a Strat again for many years. I became a die hard G&L player, till they sold, after Leo died.
I would drive down to Fullerton CA, and but direct from the factory. Have my pick of the litter, while cutting out the middle man.
I bought one S-500 after BBE took over. They would no longer let me come to the factory. They changed the manufacture process.
Standardized things. Widened the string spacing, removed the neck tilt. Went to 4 bolt neck. They were moving backwards in time.
Last week I bought my first Strat in a long time. 2014 American Deluxe V Neck Fiesta Red. N3 pickups. I've had both N1 and N2 in the past, and sold those guitars.
I like it. It'll never be my #1. But for an option in tone on recordings.
One thing that surprised me was, how comfortable the V neck is. American Deluxe.jpg

Yeah, I can't stand the feel of a maple fingerboard. I'm not exactly a fan of ebony either. Rosewood is my choice.

African Blackwood is my favorite fingerboard wood. But even then, I prefer tall frets that minimizes finger to board contact.
Basically any hard wood that doesn't need a finish on it is OK for me as far as fingerboard woods go.
