Me: Hmmm, a bit too much high end for my taste ...

Leon: and a little more treble ..

He's always struck me as a really nice dude, but I never really dig the tones he gets out of an amp. This is a good example, as I've heard the JVM410 sound a hell of a lot better than that. Not a disparaging remark, but rather just different taste in tone I guess.

We all know tone is subjective. Whatever you like best. He's got a particular style and taste in tones very similar to my own which is one of the reasons I enjoy his channel. There are tons of other channels out there that don't do it for me too. I have a hard time watching a video of someone doing a review or comparison too that is a lousy player or playing a style I don't enjoy. Leon's got the kind of chops I favor. But to each their own.

I watch some of Leon's videos because I just find him likable. I don't care how good of a player someone is, or how great their tone is, if I don't like them, I find it tough to sit through a video.

This thread reminds how some day I'd like to own a JVM, even if for a short while to be able to do an extended demo for a few weeks to get to really know this amp. I've always enjoyed plugging into them in the store. :yesway:

Hey if we all liked the same tone it would be boring!

Leon's great! He did a whole series of videos with Zen Amplification, here's a few appropriate ones!

Yeah those are cool videos. I remember when he did them. All those great amps they have stacked up too, makes me drool a bit and feeds my G.A.S. though.

Oh how I would enjoy them.

Leon does some great reviews and tutorials. I have to say that the JVM's really are a great sounding amp. I don't need all the versatility they provide myself, but they really are pretty versatile.

It's probably like pedal reviews; they always leave out the issue of.........NOISE. Why is this not an issue to these youtubers? It's really important! I've flipped most of the pedals I've bought on the merits of YouTube videos because of hiss and hum, and I always watched many for each one and they just don't mention it. So I've read posts of people complaining about the JVM being very hissy. Also I see them going the way of the 900 series; eBay and reverb for 1/2 the price of an 800. Probably a reason for that. I'd be skeptical.

Probably because everyone just deals with it and they know there are so many aspects that create noise that you simply have to work to decrease it. I always use a noise gate myself in my effects mix and power conditioners. EMI and RFI noise is nothing new. I also use the best cables I can afford and only have Moster and Mogami cables now. You just have to make the effort to decrease it.

Dang dude, what stores have you seen a JVM in? I bought mine without having ever even seen one in real life, and I drove around ATL, Nashville and everywhere in between looking for one to plug into first.

Also, I might have a 205H needing a new home soon....

I'm subscribed to his channel. Been watching his stuff for quite some time.

He always adds more treble than I like. Cracks me up. Sometimes I tell em out loud to leave it alone as he adds more in.lol

The JVM's sound great to me. Man can they get bold heavy Marshall tones. Would be wasted on me, just the same though hearing it go there is impressive. Bad ass really.

Here's another channel Leon's associated with.

That JCM 2203 sounds great. I've watched the video before too and have been subscribed to his channel for years and Zen's and G66's which he does stuff for too. Now that I've been moving away from the Fractal FM3 and amp modelers in general, I really haven't been watching the modeler videos and the stuff from G66 as much. I love it he does tube amp videos. His tone taste is similar to mine, but I don't like the pitch shift like he does. It's all good entertainment and gear videos though.

I prefer the tones Leon sculpts to Euge Valovirta. Euge sculpts some great tones too, but he likes things a lot darker than I like. Which maybe his tones may suit your taste better. Both make some great videos though and reviews. Which here is a video he does on the JVM410H. Definitely hard rock tones. but darker.

They are good amps, with solid build quality, but you need a noise gate absolutely, or mod out some compression. I had a 410 and a 215 combo modded by Jens Kruse, made a huge difference. As well, they tend to get killed by the drummer in the mix. A graphic eq in the loop really helps there. I managed to get an HJS before they stopped production...and WOW, all the problems of the original are gone. They sit in the mix beautifully, are much quieter, and have a superb noise gate. If they would just get the rights or whatever to do the Satch magic to all their JVMs, they would rule the world. You have to add reverb in the loop, but the original reverb is very meh, and the line out on the Satch is really good...sound guys always choose it over their Mic. Missed opportunity Marshall!!!

I would have to completely agree with you on this and that’s with any amp! I dunno if there’s something going on with his whole setup or he’s lost a bit of hearing or what but somethings a little off! I’ve heard every amp sound so much better, but that’s just my opinion. Maybe it sounds great in the room but it’s not coming across on YouTube well. Super nice dude though and awesome player….

I've pretty much settled on the hearing loss conclusion. I like his content a lot, but even as a dude that's definitely blasted his own ears and is a notorious treble/high mid cut hound, he almost universally makes amps sound too harsh and brittle. His showing of the Mesa Stiletto is a specifically egregious example that comes to mind. That thing sounded like a 90's budget Crate SS amp with failing connections.
