How did people deal with 1959 marshall amps or 1987x before atteaunators were available?

Jimmy Page and the studios he worked at had significantly higher gear budgets than most American kids in the 60's through 80's and really into the early 90's. A 15 watt combo was hard to find and harder to afford.
Right, kids had Montgomery Ward amps while pros had Fender, etc.

Thats what you guys did, but do you think Jimmy Page used a 1959 stack in the studio?? No he used something small like a 15 watt Supro combo or whatever they had to record.
When Priest recorded Point of Entry in a studio on the island of Ibiza, the legend goes the guys hauled their stacks into the mens room to record the solos because the tone was so good.

Can you imagine a 100 watt Plexi or JCM800 going full tilt in a mens room?

My first gigging rig was a Fender Bandmaster Reverb. In the 70's I swapped for Peavey Combo's. First a Duce, then in the 80's a Stereo Chorus. The 90's saw a Session 400 as a pedal rig. Didin't have the money for a "real" Marshall till I started doing my studio work. JMP 2204 half stack, JCM 800 combo, JTM45 half stack, Bluesbreaker, all were bought as studio amps.
JTM45 tunned out to be my favorite. And the only one I still have. Still, nothing sounds even close.
The biggest issue I've had gigging that amp, was during setup.
People are afraid it going to be too loud, before I even turn it on.
People Suck.
Just because it sounds glorious cranked. Doesn't mean it can't sound good as a pedal platform at acceptable volume.
I challenge "anyone" to prove me wrong.

Can you imagine your head is aching from a massive hangover, and you're sitting in a stall trying to rid yourself of last nights drunken 2 am Taco Bell run and all of a sudden priest starts blaring at 120+ db outside your stall door.

Well for one thing. I wouldn't want to hear priest, at any volume.
Can't tell you how many times I had to set up and sound check with the very hangover you describe.
Again, I don't play priest, or metal of any kind for that matter. Not my cup of tea.
Was just reading about songs that would be considered unacceptable in today's woke world.
I was always just told "Buck Up".

I've known Chris Layton since 1975 and I saw Stevie about a year before he passed at The Greek here in L.A. He was still loud. He had his wall of amps. But, his Tone was stunning!

There is absolutely a Rob Halford joke setup in this I’m steering well clear of. :lol:
