Hi guys,
I have just joined the forum and need your expertise on something.
I have recently acquired a DSL1 head and immediately noticed the amp produces a buzz or hum. This is loud enough that can be heard in a silent room but not so loud that can be heard during the day with ambient noise.
The hum does not come through the speakers; it is like an electric hum that seems to come from around where the on/off button is (though it’s difficult to pinpoint from where exactly). I can actually feel a subtle vibration through the amp.
At first I thought this was normal but I have just compared it with my friend’s JVM1h and his is totally silent! I checked the valves on my unit but they seem ok.
Can someone who owns a DSL1h advise if this is normal with this model? Or did I get a defective unit?

Thanks for reading!

Hello! My DSL1 doesn't have any hum. Just the normal hiss of the guitar in the high gain channel.
I think It's better take the amp the a Marshall tech...
Good luck and after you fix the amp you'll love it.
Very versatile and when you put a overdrive pedal in front of the ultra channel rsrs :headbanger:

Thanks for the replies!

I should take it for a checkup. Just wanted to know from other owners first coz I don't trust the merchant that much.
I don't think there is any effect to the tone, the amp sounds amazing indeed ArCaNun and I love it, specially the Classic Gain Channel!
Stringjunkie, I'll be waiting for your findings and your post.

Thanks again and rock on:dude:

I just received mine and it's absolutely silent. I have played about 30 minutes on it and I friggin love it already. I have all pedals in their place and it's quiet, I haven't even used my ISP yet.

Hi stringjunkie,

The buzz I hear comes from the head itself, not the speakers. It can be heard when no guitar cable is plugged in. The head has a subtle vibration than can be felt when u touch it.

I heard absolutely nothing. I had it hooked up in stereo with my JCM and I thought I heard something when the music stopped, it was the JCM.

Thanks for confirming this. Will take mine for a checkup and hope it is nothing serious.
Enjoy your new amp! :headbanger:

Mine hums too, especially when the deep switch is engaged and it is on 1 watt, not .1 watt, and it seems just like yours, it is louder when the speaker is plugged in but the hum is still there. My JTM 1 is completely silent, my JCM 1 hums a little but not as much.

It is not enough to bother me, but please let us know what you find out.

Thanks,

T

return it or have it exchange I had an experience with that on my JVM205 the hum is coming from the head not the speaker just like what your describing its something to do with the transformers, I emailed Marshall and they told me just to return it or have it exchanged

Thanks DucS2R and DragonSarc for your replies.

I also emailed Marshall but never got a response from them. I suspected it would be the transformer since the hum is coming from that area.

I just took it back to the Marshall distributor here for a check up but, honestly, support in this country is the worst I have ever encountered. They kept trying to convince me it was normal and nothing was wrong with the amp. After insisting for a while they reluctantly said they will send it to a technician for check up and this will take a month!!
I'm pretty sure they'll refuse to exchange it.

that's 99.9999% transformer mechanical noise due to the nature of the transformer construction. In fact most transformers hum, some more than the others, it is just the metals vibrating at 50 or 60 Hz so depending on the individual transformer ones would be noisier. If you even say that the room noise is enough to mask the transformer noise then my worries would be zero and would avoid all the hassle of replacement, etc

My biggest thing with this amp is that it seems quiet next to my JCM1, in fact my JCM kills the DSL in volume.

Well mine is going back, the OD channel has developed so much static noise it's not Playable IMO. It's not a hum, it's static popping. Send it back for replacement.
