More clarity . Depending on the pups , its sometimes a very nice change in tone for the better . Its a mod I do to MIM ceramic pups Strats . The owners are very happy with the new clearer tone . May ad too much sharpness to some alnico pups . Will not cause any damage .

Or could it cause some kind of damage to anything?
Hearing loss. See the hearing test in The Backstage sub forum.
better or worse tone-wise?
Icepick tone.
SSS Stratocaster, or singlecoil?:shock::agreed:
Can a 500K volume pot work in a Strat that uses 250K pots?
Sure, why not.

The difference is very subtle. A tiny bit less high end is lost to ground. It’s nearly imperceptible.

Typically use 250k pots for single coils and 500k pots for humbuckers, but thats not always the rule. What pickups do you have in your Strat?

Pretty sure my Squier SE Strats came with 500k pots and ceramic mag pickups, not a good sound to me, very brittle and HiFi. All that crap went in the trash for the good stuff, Alnico pickups, 250k CTS, PIO cap and switchcraft switch and jack...much better.
I will say this though, if I played those Strats stock with a bunch of distortion, they sounded pretty good, I'm talking Metal Zone through a Gorilla kinda distortion.
