1980 JCM 800 A-cab w/ GT-65's- opinions?

I got a local guy ("Ayyye... I gotta guy, you gotta guy. You gotta go to da guy dat I got!").

Anyway, he's got a small, humble shop, I've known him for decades, and I try to support him when I can. He's got a 1980 Marshall A-cab with GT-65's in it. I had him plug in a DSL and give it a whirl so I could hear the DSL objectively, but I was like, "Wow - what cab is that and what speakers are in it?" He said, "Uhm... I'm pretty sure they're... GT-65's?". We wouldn't know 100% unless we take the back off, but he's usually right. Either way, whatever's in it, it sure sounded sweet. The price is $895.

I'd like some opinions on this please. Are GT-65's Green backs? I know nothing about pre-1960 model Marshall cabs, and I don't know a thing about GT-65's. All I know is it sounds really really good. It might be a great match for my JCM 800 SC20H.

Don't know. Not mint though, as you can see scuffs across the bend under the logo, but no rips or tears. I'd say at least 8/10 condition. Pretty good shape for a 42 yr. old cab.

Never heard of "vented" speakers, see. It's used, selling at a used price. If I bought it and had to ditch it, I'd be axing the same $$$ for it.

Easy question. Is the non-Creamback G12-65 the same speaker as the G12M65 Creamback? Is the difference in the magnet cover and label? I have two of the G12M65 Creambacks mixed with two reissue Greenbacks in a 1960A cabinet and I like the combination. If I want more of those speakers I don't...

G12M-65’s are great speakers. Price is not too out of line it was parted out. I’d take it home for 800 if the speakers are solid.

You havent checked what speakers are inside?

The corner badge on the cab says JCM800-Lead Series, that indicates that it is an early 1980s
cabinet, about 1980 to 83 or 84.

Later cabs say JCM 800 Lead-1960 and were
usually equipped with G12T75.

It might have the G12-65's in it, or not.

One of my 800 cabs is from 1984 according
to the speakercodes, it has the vented G12T75
inside.

If i would be interested in the cab i'd take a
look inside before buying.

Good timing on this thread. I have a 1960B cab with G12-65s arriving to my house today. I’ll post an update to an existing thread once I try it out.

Speakers are dated 1981. I paid $1,050, but that included free shipping. It wasn’t cheap but new 1960A/B Marshall cabs are $1,900 from Sweetwater. I think the asking price of the cab you’re looking at is reasonable, as long as the speakers are in good condition.

You can tell from the photo of the cab you posted that it has large dust caps like G12-65s have. So that’s a good sign.

I was looking at the dustcaps too, but my
early G12T75s have the same size dustcaps.

The early 800 cabinets had their jacksockets
still towards the floor, thats another giveaway
for an early 1980s cab, but he should really
check the speakers before handing over the
money.

Im partially interested in the 12-65s too, but
read a couple times that my early 12T75s
still have bassically the same sound, but
dont know how true that is because i never
had a 12-65. I should hunt one down these
days.

Early 80s Priest stuff like Defenders of the Faith
is supposedly recorded with those speakers,
and some AC/DC too. Great for this type of Metal/Rock i guess, pretty sure amazing for other music too.

I’ve also heard that the earlier GT12T75s sound similar or the same as the 65s, but like you, I’ve never been able to A/B them.

Mine has the mid eighties g12t75 no vent. They sound good for metal. The 65 vented ones were supposed be voiced slightly better. Some claim like greens,some claim like early creams. Wish I had a set of 4 to compare.

I’m anxious like that, too. If I see a guitar/amp for a decent deal and I really want it, I usually act quickly.
