    awesome info everyone!

What type of capacitors was used in early marshall amps?

yes I meant the ones in the prototype and really early offset amps!

What type of capacitors was used in early marshall amps?

actually I found what those mallory mustard caps are, they're polyester caps. but I didn't find anything about the grey molded ones

What type of capacitors was used in early marshall amps?

I'm interested in the type of the capacitors used in old marshall amps, the grey ones, yellow ones, etc. wheather they're PIO, paper-wax, or film caps.

Unique OD tone from 1962 offset demo video explained!

actually I increased that value to 3.3Meg and now it sounds like a proper super lead marshall. maybe that's the secret to the tone... because I could never get that sound before with a modern film cap in that position. after all, it is a big cap in those amps, a 400V rated cap usually, and thus...

Unique OD tone from 1962 offset demo video explained!

Here's the demo video I'm talking about: the overdrive tone sounds like it's cutting in and out, something indicative of a tube that's biased too cold and it in the cutoff region (completely turned off when no signal is passed), and it's not like it's totally silent at low signals either, that...

Joining 2 boards side to side

glue is stronger than wood only if its perfect, Ive glued far too much boards that ended up splitting apart to take 'glue is stronger than wood' as a rule. now Im more knowladgable of how to do it right but I still want to take any percautions to make a not-100% perfect joint still hold up. oh...

Joining 2 boards side to side

the cab Im planning to make is a bassman cab clone, wide panel tweed 4x10 but instead a 1x12. I have a table saw, a hand router, chisels, clamps, sawzall, handheld planers, sawmill, and a screwdriver :D. the wood I want to use is around 12cm in diameter, spruce logs, around 100 years old judging...

Joining 2 boards side to side

why not? spruce is often said to be the best wood for instruments and speaker cabinets. although with guitar cabs it's more a matter of preference. I don't have any artistic look in mind, but I don't want it to be made entirely out of splinters and glue either. really? wow, I never have seen...

Joining 2 boards side to side

of course it's solid wood, I don't know of a single company that is or ever has made spruce plywood. no glue seems like a terrible choice for a speaker cab, but I'll think about it. wouldn't any wood be prone to cracking if it dries to fast or has some other stresses exerted on it?

Joining 2 boards side to side

but finger joins would be weak since they would split across the grain I didn't say edge joint, I said joining the boards side by side or lengthwise and that's what I meant by the wood would develop a gap in the joint, while finger edge joints usually don't, since they have a lot more surface...

Joining 2 boards side to side

I'm building a cab and I have great spruce planks that I want to use, but they are not wide enough, I need to somehow join it side to side. what would be the best solution? dowels maybe? but with dowels wouldn't it develop a gap over time from temperature and humidity changes?

    JBL D120 dimensions?

I think I found it, in an old JBL ad spec sheet, 4" @ 9/16's, or roughly116mm

    JBL D120 dimensions?

I found the outside diameter of the frame which is 12 1/4 inches, or 311.2mm roughly. but couldn't find the depth anywhere... specifically I mean the D120-8, but looking at pictures it seems the D120F's are around the same depth.

Anyone messed around with secondary emission pentodes?

Never seen a guitar amp using secondary emission pentodes, I wonder how they distort and respond to distortion... I have seen a hifi amp use them tho: forgot what the configuration was called but it uses these tubes for the phase inverter. a cross coupled phase inverter, says it right in the...

    Fargen OLDE 800 Mk2 schematic!

the gain/drive pot is missing the 1nF bright cap that the 2204 would have. the preamp tubes run from a DC heater circuit, which reduces hum. the negative feedback is taken from the 16 ohm output instead of the 4 ohm one, this quadruples the amount of negative feedback, making the amp tighter to...

How do you increase headroom in a 50w JMP?

so me explaining how to wire the cathode follower doesnt matter at all because I used an amp that contradicts that as an example for an ultra linear amplifier. yes? if I use your logic then, you were implying that ultra linear amps have less clean power because the topic of this thread is how...

How do you increase headroom in a 50w JMP?

oh I didn't know I wrote that GEC datasheet, must've been a GEC employee so long ago that I don't remember.
